Fulfilling a lifelong dream for Karen-Meredith, we spent the day at an elephant sanctuary a few hours outside of Chiang Mai. The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary has multiple sites throughout Thailand. At Camp 4, there are five elephants living a non-working life. Two of them are juveniles who have never been made to work.
Our day consisted of visiting the elephants under their large open shelter to feed them one of their favorite treats: bananas. If you give them a cheery "Bon bon!", they will open their mouths, exposing large, oddly shaped teeth to let you place the banana directly on their somewhat slimy tongues. We walked with them in the jungle while they foraged, then helped make their vitamin 'pills' (a softball-sized mixture of jungle grass, banana, rice, and various plants that carry nutrients they don't get since they are not foraging 16 hours a day), and finally finished off with a mud bath and rinse. A truly lovely day!
